I run across a few of these around the state of Tennessee. Slightly confusing at first but work great.

The main one I know about is the Exit on I40 at Gatlinburg(HUGE traffic area) but I’ve always been interested as it is about as touristy as it can get with new people using it all the time.

interesting - we have a relatively new interchange up here that has just a single crossover, right in the middle - but this looks like it might work better.

There are a few of these around Atlanta. They’re so much more efficient than other off-ramps.
Still, the most efficient exit here is just two roundabouts. I don’t know why America insists on coming up with new, elaborate solutions to congestion when the rest of the world already uses the most obvious solution.

Is there another one other than the I-88/IL-59 interchange? This design there has done wonders for traffic there at rush hour!

I’ve said this a few times on opposite, these are the greatest thing once you’ve done it a few times. My office recently relocated, but at our prior location I drove one of these every day. It easily saved me 10+ minutes on both ends of my commute. It was installed somewhere around 2008ish and was touted as the first 2 lane DD interchange in the states. As far as I’m concerned, every possible major interchange should be laid out this way.

That video nails it. The DD looks like a clusterfuck at first, but all you have to do is follow the lines, signs, and signals. It’s really easy to get used to.
We just got one put up a couple of years ago here in Michigan, not far from FCA HQ. I love it. The only part I don’t like is that if you do happen to go through there after a heavy snowfall, before the plow trucks clear it, it can be tricky to estimate where the lanes are, compared to a right-angle intersection.

Couldn’t you take this even one step further and and an over/underpass for the crossover, thus eliminating a set of lights?

They put one of these in on I-35 north of Austin. It’s done wonders to lower the congestion at this intersection. This one also has a dedicated u-turn for southbound traffic.

It’s a good design, but decades of habit are very hard to break, especially when making a split-second decision. I almost got into an accident at one of these (actually the one he mentions - the first one in Springfield). I was decelerating on the exit ramp, coming up to a yield, I did a quick head check to make sure no one was coming, saw it was clear, and almost entered the roadway. Thankfully, at the last moment, I realized there were oncoming cars, just coming from the opposite side of the road than I was expecting...

There are several of these where I live. They work GREAT...if, and only if, they are not installed in an area where there will be a large amount of non-resident traffic. Put them in somewhere with a large amount of tourist traffic and madness will ensue. People lose their freaking minds if they’ve never seen one of these before.
Also, the news reports on the first day after new one is opened about drunk people trying to go the wrong way are comical. (As long as nobody gets hurt, anyway.)

Like a dedicated bypass? Probably too expensive. A standard diverging diamond just reworks the surface roads on either end of the bridge, with minimal changes to the existing bridge itself.

Not a bypass, but have an over/underpass instead of the intersection where the lanes cross each other. Obviously that increases the price, but that seems that it would make the traffic flow even more efficiently. Combine it with actual merge lanes for traffic coming off the highway and you can have a high-throughput intersection with zero traffic lights and no need for anyone to stop at any point. The only point of potential contention I can see with that setup would be fighting for space on the merge over the bridge between people getting off the highway and people getting off and making the left to cross over it.

Yeah that would be nice. I wonder if that version of a diverging diamond exists anywhere.
